Edward Teach aka Blackbeard the Pirate Essay -- biographies bio biogra

Edward Black whiskers Teach was undoubtedly one of the close to feared and most despised pirates of all time. Edward Teach is thought to have lived in England before his pirate career, although his exact origins are unknown. He was named thatched roof, for his large black beard that almost covered his entire face. To strike terror in the hearts of his enemies Blackbeard would weave hemp into his hair, and light it during battle. Edward Teach was an unusually large man, carrying devil swords, numerous knives, and pistols- he was feared by his own crew. At the sight of this pirate, many of his victims were quick to surrender without a fight. If they did, he would often times just squander their valuables, rum, and weapons allowing them to sail away. However, if the vas resisted capture, he would either kill the crew, or maroon them. Blackbeard needed to go on his devilish image in order to maintain the respect of his crew (very few members of the crew doubted that he was the devil himself, very few didnt fear him, and therefore they obeyed him). Blackbeard began his pirating career sometime afterward 1713, as an ordinary crewmember aboard a Jamaican sloop commanded by the pirate Benjamin Hornigold. In 1716, Hornigold supplied Teach with a small crew, and a small captured watercraft to command. By 1717 Hornigold and Teach were sailing in alliance, and together were feared throughout the seas. In November 1717, Hornigold and Teach were able to capture a 26 gun French vessel called the Concorde (recent research has shown that the vessel had originally been built in Great Britain). Blackbeards pirate partner, Hornigold, decided to take advantage of a recent carry of general amnesty from the British Crown- and retire in comfort. Teach rejected t... ...ks running in blood. The battle could have had a different ending, Blackbeard had uniform one of his crew to blow up the powder magazine if the boat was taken, and fortunately for the survivors one of his less d etermined shipmates stopped him. The battle was over. It was rumoured that Blackbeards headless body ran amok and jumped into the water swimming around the ship. Whatever the truth of these tales, Maynard sailed home with Blackbeards head on a pole. Blackbeard had captured over 40 ships during his piratical career, and had been the cause of the deaths of hundreds of people. Although Blackbeards lawless career lasted only a few years, his fearsome reputation has long outlived him.The death of Blackbeard and the discharge of the remaining crew were seen as the beginning of the end of the years of buccaneering glory, and a big coup in the war against piracy.

The case of Branzburg vs. Hayes all began in 1969, when a Louisville Kentucky reporter by the name of Branzburg wrote a story, in the Courier-Journal, which described how cardinal local residences made hashish marijuana. The article went into great detail and revealed many facts, including the amount of money the two made on selling the hashish to the public. The article also featured pictures of the two individuals hands working with a plant akin substance and was identified for readers as hashish in the caption down the stairs the picture. Branzburg was in agreement with the drug dealers and promised them he would not reveal their real name calling or identities in the article.After the article was published, Branzburg was immediately subpoenaed by the Jefferson County Court system. The court demeaned that he name the two individuals featured in the article, but he stood strong and refused to give up their names like he had promised them. Branzburg argued that the Kentucky Pri vilege Statute passed in 1962 protected him from having to give up the names.(1) He also argued that the premier Amendment and Kentucky constitution, (Sections 1,2, and 8) protected his right not to disclose the information of the two individuals identities.(2) However, the Kentucky courts fought back arguing that the Kentucky Privilege Statute didnt allow a reporter to refuse to testify about things they saw, or not disclose the names of people they were in contact with. Branzburg then took his case to the Kentucky appeals court, which ruled against him one time again. He continued to fight the good fight for what he thought was true and right the case finally ended up at the dictatorial Court.Branzburgs decision not to disclose the information the court sought was due to the belief that his integrity and effectiveness as a reporter would be tarnished if he named names. Conflict in a Dangerous Spring :: essays research papers

In the novel Dangerous Spring, by Margot Benary-Isbert, contest is a reoccurring theme between many characters and events that provides the driving force for actions in the falsehood. The story takes place during the final days of World War II. Although this point in time provides the basis for the conflict, there are many other situations where conflict is shown. The main character, Karen Lorenz, experiences the most of this trouble. Conflict is the theme that is shown best in this story, because there are many situations that build up. We thence see the resolution of each situation.The story begins in spring on Easter Monday, April 2nd, of 1945. Karin Lorenz and her family live in the small town of Erfurt in Germany. The Lorenz family hears news that the Allied invasion is expected to be storming through and through into surrounding areas of Erfurt. Conflict is immediately shown here in that there is warfare taking place between Germany and the Allies. The advance of the Allies causes Karen to attempt to convince her family to explode to Eberstein, where Pastor Helmut Lobelius, Karens boyfriend, lives. Helmut had invited the family numerous times, but Karens father was against the idea because he is a doctor and needs to tend to his increasing number of patients. Karens parents also believe they are in safety because they deem that there is not much fighting left to do. This shows conflict in that Karens parents do not believe in her ideas. They think she is just an impractical girl with a silly idea, and they believe that everything will be fine with time. Word is then heard that Erfurt is in the path of the Allies and that the town is to be invaded soon. Karen finally persuades her parents they need to escape Erfurt while there is still time. At the close of the novel, the war resolves to an end. The Lorenz family returns home to a war-damaged Erfurt. Another resolution is that Karen grows more mature and her parents learn to listen to her more.Karens b rother, bowl, is a very strong supporter of Hitler at the send-off of the novel. He was involved in the Hitler Youth Movement, called the H.J. Till was carefree, daring, and brave at the beginning. Till must leave the H.J. when the family leaves for Eberstein. Battle of Trafalgar Essay

The Battle of fighting of Trafalgar was the most significant engagement won by the British against the combined forces of the French and Spanish go acrosss during the cat sleepic Wars. This employment also had significant impact on the concept of navigation when it comes to the ocean Doctrine of War. This battle proved that tactical unorthodoxy could win battles even though you might be outmanned and outgunned by your opponent you can still win battles by deviating from the old Naval Doctrine.This battle was part of a much larger campaign called the Trafalgar campaign which included several different battles that led up to the final battle at Trafalgar. This campaign was a spacious and complicated series of fleet maneuvers carried out by the combined French and Spanish fleets and the opposing moves of the British proud Navy during much of 1805. These were the culmination of French plans to force a passage through the English Channel, and so achieve a successful invasion of the get together Kingdom. The plans were extremely complicated and proved to be impractical.Much of the detail was due to the personal intervention of Napoleon, who was a soldier rather than a sailor. This was largely because Napoleon failed to consider the effects of weather, difficulties in communication, and the intervention of the Royal Navy. However in order to do this he would have to make sure that the combined French and Spanish fleets actually remained in the battle long enough to win a decisive victory.What Nelson planned on doing was instead of lining up parallel to the opposing fleet, Nelson would take his navy and charge at the enemy and deliberately cut the their battle line in two. This type of deviation from normal naval warfare in terms of navigation was inaudible of at the time. Despite the risk to the British fleet, Nelson believed that this was the best way to engage the enemy fleet in the upcoming battle because it had numerous proceedss. The primary advantage was that this would allow the British to cut half of the enemy fleet off, surround it, and force a fight to the end.This is unlike normal engagements where the battle was often anomalous due to the fact that both fleets would withdraw in advance a clear winner could be seen. The plan had three principal advantages. First, it would allow the British fleet to close with the Franco-Spanish fleet as quickly as possible, reducing the chance that it would be able to escape without fighting. Second, it would quickly bring on close canton battle by breaking the Franco-Spanish line and inducing a series of individual ship-to-ship fights, in which the Bri tish were likely to prevail.Nelson knew that the better seamanship, faster gunnery, and higher team spirit of his crews were great advantages. Third, it would bring a decisive concentration on the rear of the Franco-Spanish fleet. The ships in the front of the enemy fleet would have to turn back to aliveness the rear, and this would take a long time. Additionally, once the Franco-Spanish line had been broken, their ships would be relatively defenseless to powerful broadsides from the British fleet and would take a long time to reposition and return fire.The main drawback of this strategy was that sailing the British fleet into the combined French and Spanish battle line, the British ships would be fully clear to the enemy broadsides without the ability to return fire. In order to lessen the time the fleet was exposed to this danger Nelson would have to drive the fleet straight into the enemy battle line as fast as he could.This was yet another departure from navigation rules of n aval warfare. Nelson was also well aware that French and Spanish gunners were ill-trained, nd would probably be supplemented with soldiers. These untrained men and would have difficulty firing accurately from a moving gun platform. He managed to capture over twenty of the enemy ships and inflicted heav y casualties against while suffering few casualties himself. Unfortunately during the battle Nelson was pierced by a musket ball and died from his wounds before he could see the outcome of the victory.Some argue that his loss outweighed any gains made by the British Navy. Following the battle, the Royal Navy was never again seriously challenged by the French fleet in a large-scale engagement. Napoleon had already abandoned his plans of invasion before the battle and they were never revived. This battle firmly established Britains naval supremacy over France. In terms of navigation, this battle was very significant. The most important thing is that it proved that avocation standard navigational techniques during an engagement wont always win a battle.The best tactic is to be unpredictable so that the enemy has to suit to what you are doing thus giving you the tactical advantage. This is exactly what Nelson did in the Battle of Trafalgar and it paid off. He proved that sometimes in battle deviating from the norm of battle navigation is the best thing to do, and ever since navies around the world have looked to the strategies employed by Nelson. What is being done today is that naval commanders are being educated about naval history so that they can learn and even employ these types of strategies if they need to in battle.In conclusion, the Battle of Trafalgar was a turning point in which ships would fight naval battles in terms of navigation due to the tactical unorthodoxy employed by Nelson. This battle has had long term effects and even today commanders look back and employ some of the same strategies used. The importance of this battle cannot be underestimated because not hardly was it the turning point in the Napoleonic Wars for the British in terms of establishing naval supremacy at the time, it was a turning point in naval warfare. Navigation would never be the same thanks to one man and one decisive battle.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman

The film daybook of a Mad Black Woman depicts a situation that many spate find themselves in every day. Helen McCarter is a successful wife who has everything it seems she could possibly ever want- a fantastically beautiful menage and a well-off husband.Her husband literally throws her out of the house when he admits to having an affair so that his mistress and her children can move in. She relies on her family, close friends, and immortal to help her through the ordeal. When Helens husband is ironically maimed in a car accident, she cruelly torments him, the way that he abusively tormented her end-to-end their marriage.In one scene, Helen torments her husband because he can not bathe him egotism, and then literally throws him into a bathtub, rescuing him only seconds before he would have drowned. The film Diary of a Mad Black Woman depicts a fair amount of spousal abuse. In one of the opening scenes of the film, the husband (Charles) throws his wife out of the car and tells he r that he hates her. Not only is this an extreme example of physical abuse, it is also an excellent example of the lesser known, and therefore lesser addressed, verbal and emotional abuse.However, Helen is for about reason completely blindsided by this turn of events, although it seems as if she has been enduring this abuse for the past eighteen years of their marriage. It certainly seems as though her sense of self worth has reached such a low that she could not even see how her husband leaving her was a possibility. I felt that there were many merge messages showcased throughout this film. That is not to say it was not a good movie-I take that it was. Diary of a Mad Black Woman took on a ridiculously Christian, preachy tone.When Helen begins dating a new man, she claims that hes a good Christian man, as if this were a deal breaker. Helen apparently finds Jesus, become a devout Christian, and attends church religiously. Once her husband is injured in a gun fight, not only does she refuse to turn the other cheek, the audience is left wing to feel as if they should be cheering on her decidedly unchristian values. Helen takes advantage of her husband, which seems to be the farthest thing a true Christian would do. I think that there certainly was a lesson and a moral to this film, although Im not sure that it came across in the correct way.The director was patently trying to show that regardless of ones past, it is possible to overcome horrific tragedy. Was this through with(p) about in the correct way? I believe not. I feel as if the writer and director of this film used Christian values as a crutch in order to get forward with both a mediocre storyline and directing. Obviously, this was not an accurate portrayal of this specific type of phenomenon. It would take much more than the power of Jesus to concern ones psyche after eighteen years worth of abuse.In addition, the fact that any behavior is alright, as long as its done in the name of Jesus, is co mpletely disgusting, besides this is how the film seems to justify Helens quick recovery. But, there certainly is something to be said for such powerful message. Although the heroines plight was filmed as if she were extremely nave in the first place, ultimately, the audience is left to assume that Helen has overcome the abuse she was dealing with. This film was, in my opinion, a good example of something that could happen in anyones life. It reminds me of a woman that used to attend our church with her family.The relationship she had with her husband was obviously strange, but no one could quite decide what was wrong with it. The husband was the associate pastor, and the wife volunteered in the church nursery almost every Sunday. Therefore, it seemed as if this friction match could do no harm.Suddenly, one day she left her husband, and took her kids with her. People within the church immediately began blaming her for the abuse, claiming that she obviously did something wrong, an d that she hadnt submitted to her husband as the Bible demands. Later, people said that the only way she could be healed was through Jesus.Of course, this is ridiculous. Not to take anything away from religion, but most would agree that overcoming abuse requires therapy in varied forms, and this is assuming that no other psychological disorders have stemmed from the abuse, such as depression, anxiety disorders, of post-traumatic stress disorder.Ultimately, I feel that this was a very strong movie, and that it depicted what abuse and its effects have on a person. While it was grossly understated, the audience certainly had a very good idea of what an ill-treat person, especially an abused wife goes through during a recovery process.

Peter is a very smart kid and has very good grades. The types of friends that he hangs around are athletic hatful. On the weekends Peter sleeps in to around 1230pm to 100pm. Furthermore, to use of goods and services this opportunity to assess how Mr Chambers copes with his Activities of daily living (ADL). The rationale is to see how much assistance Mr Chambers requires, and to inform the correct health care professional of any progress, in addition to this making sure the correct data (e.g. Risk assessments, personal preferences), is transferred to his file and to avoid any inconsistencies, also to elude any awkward incidents in his future nursing care.Reflecting on Mr. Chambers and the care provided how difficult it must be for an elderly to be independent all their lives then having a younger person to take over their care. This generation seems notoriously proud, and keeping within policies of care, and trying to give him his dignity, is quit e hard to balance, an example of this would be infection control, having to wear gowns and gloves because of protocols, however this must be degrading in some respects for Mr Chambers. These procedures can have an effect on him psychologically, conversely he may understand if I explained to him why these measures are in place. Seeing Mr Chambers upset can be daunting at first, but to insure why he his upset is the key to a happy outcome. So communication is very important in this situation, and to actively listen to his concerns will also be very beneficial to me as a nurse.For instance he may state how he keeps soiling himself, would suggest he has incontinence problems rather, other than he just couldnt make it to the bathroom. Mr. Chambers mobility was an issue, and again this must be difficult to state to younger active person, it would most probably also be embarrassing, as they were young once, and after all it is the body that ages. My concern would be to try and empathise with him, and keep the communication open using methods such as eye contact and body language to help me, and maybe use an experience of my own, such as family members, which may help him relax some more, and foretaste that this helps my future practice .When you feel dignified, you have the sense of selfworth, confident, happy , it also builds a trust with the person who is nursing you , without it you can feel devalued, no confidence, low self esteem thus leading to patients unable to carry out tasks such as (ADLs) where they maybe of been capable of doing so before. I aim to enhance my Nursing care and hope that I learn something new in every given situation, to help build on my knowledge which in turn will give excellent care to the most important person the patient, and also to share my knowledge within the team of healthcare professionals, and in turn learn from others experience and value each patient like you would your own family regardless of their condition, mood ,ethni city, religion we are all equals and sometimes this can be lost in organizations.Nursing is lifelong learning matter, and patients can be uncertain everyday is new, challenges will arise from patients, demands will have to be met, stressful situations will be dealt with, but this is the profession I choose to be in, and my future Nursing will always be to stay professional, Contrary to this what should be predictable, or should be practiced throughout the healthcare settings is the concept of dignity.
