WineCoff Hotel Fire free essay sample
Would you stay in a hotel that advertises ââ¬Å"absolutely fireproofâ⬠? The average person would say yes, most people think ââ¬Å"It canââ¬â¢t get any safer than absolutely fireproof can it? â⬠Well there was a problem December 7th 1946, when the Winecoff Hotel caught on fire. Opened in 1913 as the tallest building in Atlanta, Georgia. Built with a steel-framed structure making the owner think it was fireproof, but it wasnââ¬â¢t. History of the Winecoff Hotel, now known as the Ellis Hotel The steel-framed structure was built on a small lot, with about 4,386 feet per floor. Guest rooms extended from the third to the fifteenth floors, with around fifteen rooms on each floor. Corridors on guest floors were set up in an H-shape, with two elevators and upward flights of stairs opening into the cross halls, and opposing downward runs of stairs converging on a single landing from the legs of the H. In taller buildings multiple stairways were becoming common practices. Atlanta building code of 1911 permitted building lots of less than 5,000 square feet to have a single stairway. The steel structure of the building was protected by structural clay tile and concrete fireproofing. Interior partions of the building were made of hollow clay tile covered with plaster. Room doors were wood, with movable transom panels above each door for ventilation. The hotel roomââ¬â¢s walls were finished with painted burlap fabric extending to the ceiling. Guest rooms were finished with as many as seven layers of wallpaper. The hotel did have a central fire alarm system, manually operated from the front desk, and a standpipe with hose racks at each floor, but there was no automatic sprinkler system. The fireââ¬â¢s point of origin was on the third floor west hallway, where a mattress and chair had supposly been temporarily placed in the corridor, close to the stairway to the fourth floor. One theory is that someone dropped a cigarette may have ignited the mattress or other combustibles in the corridor. The fire was first noticed around 3:15 a. m. By a bellboy who had gone to the fifth floor to help a guest, becoming trapped there. The first (and only) call to the fire department was made at 3:42 a. m. by the night manager. The manager attempted to warn guests by telephone about the fire, but the building fire alarm was not sounded. By the time the manager attempted to make phone calls to guests there was no escape possible from the upper floors in any case. The first engine and ladder companies arrived within thirty seconds of the call, by that time people were already jumping from windows. Fire department ladders could extend only part way up the building, but many guests were rescued in that manner. Ladders were placed horizontally across the alley from an adjoining building, allowing some rescues to be effective. Fire spread was hampered by the stair arrangement, while the stairs were not closed off by doors, the configuration placed ascending and descending runs around the corner from each other, keeping fire and hot gas from quickly ascending the stairs. Also, fire did not spread through the enclosed elevator shafts, laundry chutes, nor the mail chute. The fire fed on the burlap wallcoverings and ignited room doors. Doors and transoms were burned through on all but the fourteenth and fifteenth floors. Guests opened windows seeking fresh air and rescue, allowing fresh air to make the fire bigger. The fire investigation revealed that an open transom was closely associated with the ignition of a given guest room and its contents. Firefighters were hampered and in some cases injured, by falling bodies. Many guests tied bed sheets together and tried to descend. The Atlanta fire department mustered 385 firefighters, 22 engine companies and 11 ladder trucks, four of which were aerial ladder units at the Winecoff Hotel fire. A second alarm was sounded at 3:44 a. m. and a third at 3:49 a. m. with a general alarm (all available unites respond, including off duty personnel) at 4:02 a. m Mutual aid from surrounding departments brought a total of 49 pieces of equipment. Firefighters climbed adjoining buildings to fight the fire and rescue guests, including a 12-story building across the 10-foot wide alley, and a six-story building on the opposite side of the street. Of the 304 guests in the hotel, 119 died, 65 were injured, and 120 were rescued uninjured. The hotelââ¬â¢s originals owners lived in an apartment attached to the hotel, they also died in the fire. 32 of the deaths were among those who jumped, or fell while trying to descend ropes made of sheets tied together. Among the hotel guests were forty high school students on a state YMCA of Georgia sponsored trip to Atlanta, 30 of whom died. A national conference on fire prevention was called in 1947 at the calling of U. S. President Harry S. Truman in response to the La Salle and Winecoff fires. La Salle fire happened June 5, 1946 months earlier than the Winecoff fire. These fires highlighted the problems associated with unprotected stair openings, which provided paths for the spread of smoke and fire, preventing the use of the stairs for escape. The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Building Exit code of 1927 had already set forth principles requiring the use of multiple, protected means of egress, this was further revised to allow the code to be incorporated as law. The Winecoff fire led to the incorporation of research into flammability of building materials into code requirements and design standards. At this meeting, automatic fire alarm systems and automatic sprinkler systems were talked about. As seen in this paper the Winecoff Hotel was not ââ¬Å"absolutely fireproofâ⬠, itââ¬â¢s sad these events have to happen so the NFPA can see the code changes we need. Events like these shouldnââ¬â¢t have to happen for the NFPA to see the results of what needs changed.

buy custom Law of Purchasing and Supply essay
buy custom Law of Purchasing and Supply essay Question 1 Subject to sale of goods Act, there is no disguised condition as to the quality of any particular purpose of goods supplied. The rule of Caveat Emptor which in simple terms means buyers beware is greatly applied in sale of goods contracts. However, when the sale in question is made by description, the rule is departed in favor of the rule for goods sold by description. The latter rule states that goods sold by description should meet the description thereof or else, the buyer has the right to repudiate the contract. In this case, the car sold did not correspond to the description and the plaintiff (buyer) could therefore maintain an action against the defendant (seller). Case Law Grant v Australian knitting Mills Ltd (1936). The plaintiff went to the defendants shop and asked for a pair of long wooden underwear. The goods were displayed on the counter before him and a sales assistant selected a pair which he bought. The underwear contained an excess of sulphite and the plaintiff contracted dermatitis after wearing it. Held: the chemical should have been removed before the underwear was sold. The defendant was therefore liable. Sues Luxury Cars (SLC) will be held liable for the negligent advice that Tina gave to Richard as implied in the warranty of disclosing the dangerous nature of the goods to the ignorant buyer. Tina breached s13. As in the case, Oscar Chess v Williams, the descriptive statement which is part of s13 is incorporated into the contract. In case they knew that the car was not defective, and its sign was not the actual one and that Richard is ignorant of the condition of the car thus; they are held liable for not warning Richard of the probable danger. Question 2 One of the essentials of a valid contract is the existence of offer and acceptance. In this case, MHL offered cottage. This was a conditional offer as some conditions had to be fulfilled for the contract to become binding. Paul and Richard indeed complied with the conditions and the contract therefore became binding. It is imperative to know that though an offer made through post becomes effective when the letter is received by the offeree, acceptance by post becomes effective from the time the acceptance letter is posted and not when the letter is actually received by the offeror. In the case at hand therefore, Paul and Richard, having posted the acceptance letter before the offer could lapse, had bound MHL. They can therefore maintain a legal action against MHL for letting the room in question. The fact that MHL had not received the letter of acceptance and the money is no defense in law. Case Law The case in Byrnev. Van Tien Hoven: it was held that the acceptance was effective when the plaintiffs posted their letter on October 11th in New York although the defendants in Cardiff were not aware of the posting. Upon suing for damage, Paul and Richard are entitled to recover a reasonable amount for the expenses incurred. They are also entitled to the down payment they had made. Question 3 Petrolheads would be held liable for the damages caused to Sue. In this scenario, the rule of vicarious liability is applicable. The rule states that an employer is liable for the torts committed by his servant provided they are working in the course of their employmment. The employee who caused injury to Sue was acting in the course of his employment and this makes his employer liable thereof. Case Laws In Lloyd v Grace Smith CO 1912 A.C. 716, the plaintiff had sought advice from the defendants, a firm of solicitors whose managing clerk conducted conveyancing work without supervision. He advised the plaintiff to sell some property fraudulently persuading her to sign certain document that transferred the property to him. He disposed of it and kept the proceeds. Held: even though the fraud had not been committed for the benefit of the employers, nevertheless, they were liable for the clerk had been placed in a position to carry over such work and had acted throughout in the course of his employment. Furthermore, when they put their notice, they dont specify to their customers what may cause harm to them while within their premises so that necessary precautions may be laid down. When Trevor, an employee, knock Sue down, he should be held liable for his negligence. He should do what a reasonable persons needs to do while discharging his duty. Petrolheads cannot exclude or restrict liability for negligence even though Sue was aware of the notice. Being aware of the terms in it should not be taken as indicating his voluntary acceptance of any risk. A person cannot so exclude his liability for negligence except in so far as the notice made satisfies the requirement of reasonableness. In this case, Perolheads cannot protect Trevor for his negligence, hence, he should be held liable for the damages caused. Petrolheads should be held liable for the duty of care for the occupiers of their premises, so Sue is entitled for the damages caused to him by Trevor. Buy custom Law of Purchasing and Supply essay

Insolvency Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Insolvency Law - Essay Example Contextually, in order to improve their image in front of the investors companies at times tend to adopt approaches which though considered negative in business but still they ensure better business performances. This aspect along with various other reasons like conflicts amid the management, a lack of proper communication in business, crisis in the business sector as well as improper controlling of the business activities further result in impacting the ability of business units to pay back the debt of their creditors and shareholders thereby affecting the performance and existence of the business up to a considerable extent2. This aspect in legal terms is considered as insolvency. In this particular context, the insolvency law regulates the companies who are not been able to pay their debt to the shareholders or creditors. It is directly implied to companies which are being formed under the Companies Act of 2006 in the UK. However, with the passage of time, the issue of insolvency has become more and more severe which further calls for the need of stern laws and principles3. Contextually, the Cork report will be vital to consider which has recommended certain principles to be implemented in the operations of companies that would be helpful in dealing with the issue of insolvency. This particular report will mainly highlight one of the recommended aims in paragraph 198 of the Cork report and depict its importance and need through critical analysis. As described above, the Cork report was formed with the intention to recommend certain principles that could be implemented in the operations of business units to assure a more profitable business operation further reducing the probability of insolvency of the business. The report came up with certain aims for improvement in the modern day insolvency law which in turn led to the formation of the Insolvency Act of 19864. In the report formed by Kenneth Cork, there were certain

Tracking Options Using Gps For Alzheimers Patients Coursework
Tracking Options Using Gps For Alzheimers Patients - Coursework Example A detailed analysis of the problem is given addressing certain of the ethical implications of monitoring, or choosing not to monitor. The presumption exists that as a dementia worsens some form of GPS monitoring will be utilized by family members, or the staff of an assisted living facility. A physiological description is given briefly describing the biochemical markers of Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease, as well as the symptomatic criteria used in a positive diagnosis of dementia as a result of Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease. Warning signs and the prognosis of the condition are given. While no organic treatment exists, the advantages of GPS monitoring are discussed, including the implications and questions that must be addressed prior to choosing an option. Advantages and disadvantages of tracking strategies are discussed in addition to three information systems which are compared in accordance with a list of five practical criteria. Finally, recommendations are provided in the interest of dignity for the Alzheimerââ¬â¢s patient, but with respect towards the needs of family members and the likely inevitability of assisted care. An option of a monitoring service utilizing the expertise of a professional Corporation is concluded to be the most valuable and practical option for the protection and dignity of Alzheimerââ¬â¢s sufferers.... With longer lifespans common, and aging of the population is inevitable. As a greater proportion of that population grows elderly, pathologies associated with aging will become of paramount importance. Some theorists may reason without sympathy for the humanity of those suffering from elderly dementia, or other forms of neurological illness similar to Alzheimer's disease. There may be some question as to whether the afflicted truly have dignity in the first place. There may be some that like an Alzheimer's patients to some form of devolved animal, lacking a human consciousness and the ability to plan for the future. Under this context both safety and convenience of care must be Paramount. Towards this end various forms of restraints, and/or monitoring technologies may be devised as a way to control the movements of elderly patients. In the twilight of human existence, those suffering from neurological diseases may seem to be struggling through a fog confusing memory with present real ity. For a fleeting moment, it might make sense to seek out people and places long past, to resume old routines and see familiar faces without the cognizance of what lives on only in the past. An elderly person trying to return to a familiar setting that may not have existed for decades could easily wander away from caregivers and placed themselves in peril. Time and money must be spent tracking their movements and gently returning them to locations that seem wildly at odds with the fragmentary grip on reality that motivates the mentally diseased elderly. Estimates indicate that 60% of Alzheimerââ¬â¢s patients will become lost wandering away from their homes or places of care at some point during the progression of their

Summary - Essay Example rganization needs to provide more information to the customers and teach them how to use the organizationââ¬â¢s goods and services properly and this will decrease the cost of dealing with them. If the problem is not solved then the organization should change the way the organizations charges money from the customer. If the problem continues then the organization should try to cut its cost by changing their channel of distribution for the customer. If nothing works, the organization should resort to end their relationship. This article has been authored by Hanssens et al. and in this article the author states that it is quite difficult for organizations to measure how effectively their investments in their marketing function have proven to be (Hanssens 1). For this purpose the authors develop a model for measuring the effectiveness of their investments in marketing. The purpose of developing the model was to provide marketers in making decisions regarding the selection of their products marketing mix with the aim of enhancing customer equity. The outcome of developing the model was that the researchers were able to develop equations that helped identifying how different investment factors resulted in different outcomes. For example: the researchers identified and equation which helped them in identifying the impact of increasing television based advertising on the aim of acquiring

Reflective Essay On Learning Skills And Employment Education Essay
Reflective Essay On Learning Skills And Employment Education Essay Introduction After a long summer of fun and unemployment, it was finally time to get back to the real world. No more endless free time, it was time to get my brain working for something productive. I enrolled in a bachelor in software development, I was always fascinated by computers and being able to modifying it was always a dream for me. And what a surprise it was for me when I saw in my time table that I had a course called Academic Skills for Business, what is it? Im going to be software developer, why do I need it? After attending two lectures, I began taking interest in it, it made me see thing that I never thought of before. And then the assignment dropped. 2Ã 500 Word, I dont even know if I carry that much vocabulary, but I saw it as a challenge. It will help me develop my writing skills and language, and its a great ways to analyze my progress through this course, maybe if I have some free time I will do it for my other courses. First chapter of the course, that describes the skills that employers look for In General and what skills we gain as a student. From what I understood there are five skills that are needed to be employed in a high level of responsibility job: Communication, human relations, work survival, leadership and research and planning. A good manager needs to acquire good relations with his subordinate, in order to motivate them; he should be able to take good initiative after analysing all the resource available and fight for his ideas to survive in the organisation. I already had a general idea of what employer where looking for but I was neglecting the human relation aspect, however it turns out to be the most important one. In order to get to the top ladder of an organisation, I need to work out my communication skill, which means getting the appropriate feedback, negotiating, perceiving nonverbal messages, interviewing. And to enforce my work survival by initiating new ideas, meeting goals and accepting responsibility. In order to fulfil my desire of success, I need to make changes in my life, and thats what distinguishes an adult form a teenager, the ability to make changes in your behaviours to adapt to the requirement of the society. The road to rich cant be made without compromises, if it isnt then the success wont be as tasty as if I had put effort and made sacrifice for it. Thankfully some of these skills will be developed thanks to high school. High school allow student to reinforce some technical skills that can be transferred to work. The most important one is the ability to meet deadlines, and i know what Im talking about, been one of the laziest person in the word, I had to catch up or I will be left alone, and planning was the solution to my laziness and lack of organisation ( I will go more in depth in the according section). It allows to develop writing skills with assignments like this one or the communication aspect, answer are more structured and feedback more centred to the subject. It also allow to work in a team, get a touch of the dynamic of a group, get of feel of group brainstorming and its draw backs. Time Management Here comes my black beast, hell for a lazy person like me. I always tried to manage my time but without success, I tried post-it, dairy, phone application but I always fail. Never used a method more than three consecutive day, I always give up so quickly, always postponing what I had to the day before for the next day, its just a mean cycle. But now things are more serious, the British system gives away to students a lot of time away from class but they assume that we are responsible enough to manage ours time wisely. But the draw backs for lazy students like me are huge, its an automatic fail if there is no adaptation to the system. So here is my challenge for this year: managing my time as wisely as possible. And thanks to this assignment, I realize that I have failed again, here I am 3 days before the dead line and I only wrote 1/3 of the essay earlier this day, counting each word and realizing how I could have done this work before with a simple planning. I was there when the sli des of this chapter were projected; I can still remember all advises that our teachers gave to us like setting goals, prioritizing assignments, make a weekly planning. Great ideas, I was even advising other students with the same strategies but I didnt apply it for myself, which is completely useless. Now here I am, facing my responsibility once again. This time I have to make BIG changes in my behavior, this nonchalance cant be supported anymore or It will automatically lead me to failure and thats not an option I was planning for my future. Starting from today, I will not use only one method for managing my time, but I will use all of them, I will try by any mean to keep a daily list of what have to do and plan for what I should do all the week that follow. Actions are the seed of fate deeds grow into destiny. Ã Harry S Truman. Its time to man up, all successful people achieved their dream by setting goal and fighting as much as possible to achieve them and even to go beyond , they put all their energy into it, and they are human being just like us. Mea culpa but here come the power of the human being, the ability to learn from their mistake and to adapt accordingly. When I first read the assignment I thought it was just another paper work but it reveal that I had more writing skill as I thought I had and looking back at what I did from the beginning of the semester made me realize that I evolved somehow , gain some maturity and with an anger of success and motivation. Creativity skills brainstorming Next lesson was creativity skills brainstorming, before attending this class I already had a good idea about it. But after couple of slides, I realized that my definition of brainstorming was vague compared to the one projected on the screen. This new definition distinguished brainstorming in too types: Individual Brainstorming and Group brainstorming. I always thought that brainstorming was a group activity, but I actually disagree in this statement -When you brainstorm on your own you will tend to produce a wider range of ideas than with group brainstorming (slides from chapter 3)-, when brainstorming is done lonely, it create a tighter range. First not having an external point of view narrow the ideas that could have emerged during a session, an external analysis create a judgment of an idea and opens the door to new opportunity that couldnt be founded lonely; however by brainstorming individually you can get more specific detail and draw a good image of the situation. Creative thinking is not a talent; it is a skill that can be learnt. It empowers people by adding strength to their natural abilities which improves teamwork, productivity and where appropriate profits.(Edward de Bono) Brainstorming reinforce team work, dealing whit other schoolmates, we worked on a presentation about internet security and privacy for this course. It was an amazing experience; we applied the Simplex process after finding our subject. We began our first brainstorming session by finding the problem using trigger question like: what informational resources are we going to use? On what should we focus our research? How are we going to divide the tasks? How can we do a good presentation? The next meeting, after gathering as much relevant information as possible, we shared our result to let everyone aware of the content of the presentation, the main idea was to make a team work and not to just let everyone work on his own or it will create an heterogenic presentation. And we arise more questions about the planning and preparing the framework of our slides. The next time we met, we finalized the slides of our presentation and started preparing to face the audience. Hopefully no problem oc curred between the group and a nice atmosphere was created, I allowed us to get more familiar with each other and a better understanding of others point of view and way of thinking. Finally when the day of the presentation came, it was time for action, some of us were a little bit frighten and anxious but it all collapsed when the show began. It all went smoothly, we were mastering our research and audience, most of them werent aware of the content we were exposing, so we kept their attention for the whole hour. I really enjoyed this experience and Im ready to do as much possible team work using a structured method like the simplex process. Decision tree and Statistics A decision tree is a tree in which each branch node represents a choice between a number of alternatives, and each leaf node represents a classification or decision. In decision analysis, a decision tree can be used to visually and explicitly represent decisions and decision making. In data mining, a decision tree describes data but not decisions; rather the resulting classification tree can be an input for decision making. This page deals with decision trees in data mining. Data mining approaches to my course name database analysis and design, I read a book about it and found it really interesting because it deals with economic situation and that rimes with money. I was planning on continuing my studies threw the database analysis area and I will be dealing with decision tree a lot, so having a first look of it in my first years of college get me a quick touch to it.For example, we might have a decision tree to help a financial institution decide whether a person should be offered a loan: http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/%7Ebillw/cs9414/notes/ml/06prop/id3/dtree.gif Expected monetary value is a value based on probability that factors in all possible monetary outcomes of a given situation. The value is reached by multiplying the percentage of each possibility occurring by the monetary loss or gain associated with that outcome. At that point all of those values, positive and negative, are combined to reach the expected monetary value. This calculation is a valuable tool for those tasked with making a decision involving several possible outcomes, as it represents the most statistically accurate estimation of the eventual result. In order to calculate the EMV of a situation you should follow these steps: Define the alternative actions you are choosing from. These are labeled a1-ai. Define the states of nature which the is variable that will affect the various outcomes of a. These are labeled s1-sj. Set up a payoff table. List a1-ai as the columns and s1-sj as the rows. Fill in the values for each a and s option. Each value is the expected payoff for that occurrence (hence the name payoff table). Determine the probability for each s value. Find the EMV for each a value. Use the formula EMV(ai) = (s1 X ai) + + (sj X ai) Another notion was introduced: descriptive statistics. Basically it was some new math calculation like the average, the mean, the mode, the median, the range and the interange. Most of these feature have been familiar with me because I did some applied math to economy, however I had a blur vision of the bias until I start overdoing exercises about it at home. Then we continued on measure of variation, introducing the variance, the standard of deviation and variance of uncertainty. Conclusion Here we are, after 2 months of courses , I learn a lot threw these course and enjoyed myself attending it, writing this reflective essay really help me put thing into retrospective. My technical ability for the course is more than average and I intend to keep practicing to survival in this jungle called university. I found some energy to fight back and overcome this nonchalance that that keep me avoiding important thing and not managing my time wisely. Its time to act now. Finally, I still have hard time to believe I finally did it, just few words before the gargantuan milestone of 2Ã 500 words, never thought I would have finish it in time and having fun doing it. It reveals writing skills that I never tough existed and learning so much about myself during the process. Putting everything on the paper helps you to draw a perfect picture of a period of time which helps you modifying your weakness and evaluating your evolution. Thank you for the reading; it was a pleasure to write it.

The Importance of Giving It Your All Essay -- Personal Narrative
The Importance of Giving It Your All It was a crisp autumn afternoon; the sun was shining and the parched leaves rustled as a cool breeze waltzed through. Today was the day I had anticipated, the day I would go and take the Elementary School Gifted Program test. This was my goal, to succeed the gifted program and be known at the top of my class. I was a little nervous, but I ignored my sweaty palms and scratchy throat as I followed slowly behind my mother, because I knew I had to do this. An elderly woman opened the door. She was slender and fragile-looking. She had thick gray hair that was pulled tightly back into a sleek professional bun. She wore a beige woven sweater with the sleeves rolled just above the elbow and black, freshly pressed slacks. The woman introduced herself as Sandra Schmidt and invited us in. After settling my mother in the family room, she immediately took me to the back of the house where a small card table and two fold-out metal chairs were set up. We sat down and promptly began. She asked me myriad verbal questions of varying degrees of difficulty,...

Argument as Inquiry Essay
ââ¬Å"Sometimes the purpose of an argument is to generate truth, which will then resonate with an audience and be persuasive, but persuasion is the by-product and not the goalâ⬠(Weeblog). As a society, the importance of communication and the never ending search for truth has motivated great scholars and thinkers alike to express their ideas and values in the form of an argument. As seen from the quote above, the form of an argument not only serves a purpose in generating truth, but also in understanding perspectives and as a mode of relaying information. Truth to most is a relative term. So then how is it possible to successfully argue a truth? The book, everythingââ¬â¢s an argument provides a clear answer to this paradox, ââ¬Å"the point of argument is to discover some version of the truth, using evidence and reasonsâ⬠¦The aim of persuasion is to change a point of view, or to move others from conviction to action. In other words, writers or speakers argue to find some truth; they persuade when they think they already know itâ⬠(Lunsford 6). Therefore, the method of presenting an argument does not necessarily mean the presenter must convince his audience, but simply provide absolute facts. As this varies from culture to culture, the response to a well argued truth can be a simple, quiet acceptance, or a heated debate. Most importantly however, is that in presenting a truth, the speaker or writer is using this argument as a mode of inquiry not only towards those that experience his argument, but towards himself as well. These personal arguments can be seen in a deep meditation or in prayer, and can also be used in a personal decision making. As a result, this purpose for an argument not only helps the speaker to understand the truths and beliefs of others in the world around him, but also increasing his ability to question himself. Understanding perspectives is a very humbling and challenging way to argue. Carl Rogers, a successful psychotherapist who founded the Rogerian argument, achieved a method which ââ¬Å"is based on finding common ground and establishing trust among those who disagree about issues, and on approaching audiences in nonthreatening waysâ⬠(Lunsford 6). For that reason, the success of the argument is founded not only in trust but also on the grounds of first understanding othersââ¬â¢ perspectives and principles; encouraging the opponent to genuinely listen and learn from what is said. With a foundation of truth and understanding, an argument can be valued in its ability to provide convincing evidence and information. Philosopher Aristotle ââ¬Å"provides an elegant scheme for classifying the purposes of arguments, one based on issues of time ââ¬â past, future, and presentâ⬠(Lunsford 10), also known as forensic arguments. Many lawyers, politicians, and great speakers use evidence, policies, and facts from the past to support or justify their present argument. These arguments can focus not only on scientific, religious values, but on existing ethical and cultural differences as well. There are a variety of ways that different cultures handle legal systems, and thus various ways of presenting arguments. For instance, the Muslim religion and culture disparages and scorns women who refute or defy the authority of their husbands. Whereas the cultural ideals of American society encourage women to think for themselves, and challenge their husbands ââ¬â often times with arguments. The ability to understand different cultures can be found in their own method of argument. Additionally, using arguments from the past can serve as a fountain of information and truth, as well provide a solid foundation and validate future arguments. Cambodia - The Past and Present essays
Cambodia - The Past and Present essays Cambodia, then, like so many other nations in the developing world, is an agricultural country, and, regarding the cash incomes of its people, desperately poor. In the past, Cambodia was able to earn foreign exchange to pay for imported goods by selling agricultural surpluses-of rice and corn, for example-or plant crops, such as pepper, rubber, and cotton. Its normal patterns of trade were broken up in the wars of the 1970s. When the fighting died down, Cambodian trade became lively again, but more informal, which benefited many individual traders but deprived the government of money it needed to pay for essential services, like electricity, schools, water, and highways. There was some question at the end of the 1980s if Cambodia would ever be able to trade its way back into the kind of prosperity that it had enjoyed in earlier times. Of course, the word "prosperity" is a relative one. Even in the peaceful 1960s, Cambodia was one of the poorest countries in eastern Asia, at least regarding individual income. It is hard for even a relatively poor Westerner to imagine just how poor-in terms of cash, choices about the future, and possessions-a Cambodian farmer or unskilled laborer has always been, or what an annual income of less than the equivalent of two hundred dollars means in terms of the everyday life of farmers and their families. In nearly all Cambodian families, everyone works hard to grow the food and earn money needed to survive. Even so, by international standards, most Cambodians are very poor. Being poor in Cambodia means eating less than a pound of meat a month, and a family's earning less than six hundred dollars from a rice crop that has occupied most of its labor, intensively, for the equivalent of three months. For most Cambodians, there is a little question of new clothes, gadgets, or vacations. The money from the rice crop has to last the farming family for an entire year unless the husband leaves hom...
